H & M Bay, Inc. - Passive RFID Pallet Putaway System

Business issues

  • Accurate tracking of inventory location assignments with a user-friendly system.
  • Limit operator intervention for recording putaway and pickups.

Solution

After testing various metal-mounted tags and mounting positions, a recommended tag was selected.  Each pallet position in the warehouse was outfitted with a unique Gen2 UHF tag.  The cooler and freezer doors where outfitted with stationary Motorola XR440 UHF readers to capture pallet tags as they entered and exited the storage facility.  Each Crowne reach truck was outfitted with a Motorola RD5000 Mobile Reader to automatically record the pallet that was being moved.  Once a pallet was placed in a storage location, both the pallet and storage IDs were associated for the putaway and sent to H & M Bay's WMS through web service calls.

Benefits

  • Reduced training for temporary associates using the putaway system due to the ease of use of the system.
  • Improved inventory tracking due to location and pallet information being recorded automatically with limited operator intervention.
